There are four main options when it comes to cellphone coverage when traveling.
Carrier
e-sim
Global sim
On arrival
1. Your carrier
Most carriers have a plan for travelers that want to stay connected wherever they go. XYZ carrier for $X while you travel. This is convenient, it works and you don't have to think about it. You will most likely have to dial number accurately in the new area due to the country code difference. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes normal. For the uninitiated, to dial +222 or +68 or whatever country code you need to use, takes a little getting used to but dial the wrong number a few times and you'll remember fast.
You need to know the details of the plan. Imagine reading the UNLIMITED TRAVEL PLAN but the fine print shows the real limits that aren't quite as unlimited as advertised. It's important to take the time to know the details of the plan.
2. The e-sim
What is an e-sim you ask? It's an electronic sim. Much like the physical sim card that you insert into your phone, the e-sim is added electronically to your phone and requires no physical sim to function. Most modern phones can have as many as five e-sim accounts available. This is perfect for someone that travels for work regionally and frequently. Some carriers in some places will allow you to buy an e-sim before arrival. You may have to take advantage of the airport wifi to get the e-sim if you can only get it when you arrive.
3. Global sim
There are many options for data and calling from the global sim market. They range in price from provider to provider and sometimes it makes sense. The corporate boy that's always on the go may find value in a global sim because he gets to keep the dame number and use it wherever he goes. In general, this is the most expensive option. In most cases, sim swaping is the most affordable.
4. On arrival
In most places, the carriers have a kiosk at the airport for you to get a sim and insert it into your phone. Usually the first ones are the most expensive. I've found that asking if there is one after immigration yields a better deal. If you're really budget conscious, you may find shops at malls or shopping centers are the very best options.
